NATIONAL NHS SHORTAGE OF BLOOD TEST EQUIPMENT - Information re non-urgent blood tests
A supplier to the NHS has advised us of a global shortage of some equipment we use for taking blood tests.
Anyone who needs a test for urgent health problems will still get one, but where your clinician recommends it’s safe to do so, we may be in touch with you to ask you to come back for a test at a later date, or your appointment may be rescheduled.
Given the nature of the shortage, we cannot give an exact date for when the test will be rescheduled, but please be assured that if your condition or symptoms require it, then you will get a test, and we will be re-booking your test when supplies become more easily available.
If your condition or symptoms change or get worse, please contact the NHS as you would normally.
VACCINES FOR 16-17 YEAR OLDS - Latest Information
We are aware that the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation has recommended the extension of the Covid-19 vaccination programme to 16 and 17 year olds. We are awaiting further guidance from NHS England on when the programme will commence and how the vaccinations will be administered to this age group. Please do not contact the surgery - eligible young people will be contacted when the programme commences to advise on the next steps.
RE-OPENING OF FACE TO FACE APPOINTMENTS
Week commencing 5th July 2021
As we come out of the restrictions from the COVID pandemic we are making plans to gradually increase the access to face-to-face appointment by direct patient booking, starting week commencing 5th July 2021.
As you know the surgery has remained open throughout the pandemic at our main site and we have conducted face-to-face appointments throughout the year. Until now these have been booked by GPs themselves after telephone consultations to ensure safety. And under careful protocols for the Nursing Team, who again have been seeing many patients face-to-face throughout the last 15 months. We have provided more appointments in the last year than ever before. The surgery team have also been instrumental in setting up and delivering the COVID vaccination programme in our area.
We also recognise that the branch sites have largely been closed for over a year and we need to try and start the re-opening process. We have made initial plans for face-to-face appointments to commence at each branch:-
- South Milford Surgery - From week commencing 5th July 2021
- Micklefield Surgery - From week commencing 5th July 2021, appointments will be available with GPs on Monday, Wednesday and Friday PM, medication collections will continue on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons.
- Thorpe Willoughby - From Tuesday 13th July 2021, we will have GP and Nurse appointments available on Tuesday afternoons, initially.
We recognise that for routine and on-going chronic care some patients would like to book an appointment with their chosen GP and meet with them face-to-face. Other patients have found the process of telephone, video and online appointments much more convenient. Therefore, as we move to a new appointment system as restrictions reduce, we want to retain all options for patients so that access is in a way that suits each patient best. We will therefore continue to offer telephone appointments as well as re-introducing face-to-face routine appointments. We will continue to have urgent appointment slots every day as we always have. We also have an online access option on the home page below, for patients to use 24 hours a day. This is titled "Online Patient Triage" to give further flexibility to patients.
We will continue to adhere with NHS & Government guidelines on infection prevention & control and PPE requirements, so this will mean some reduction in capacity within the surgery and may slow clinicians down on occasions. We ask for your support in understanding this and continue to wear a face mask when visiting the surgery.
We would also ask you to please respect the frontline staff booking these appointments for you, they have been working incredibly hard and demand is at the highest levels, they want to provide the appointments that are needed but need to work within the guidelines and protocols that GPs have set and require, so please treat them with respect when speaking to them.
Please remember there are also other care providers that can assist you with minor illnesses and injuries:-
- NHS 111
- Urgent Treatment Centres (Selby, York & Leeds)
Sometimes we may direct you to a different service, this is not because we don't want to see you, but it will be because this is the most suitable service for your needs. For example, the MSK service for physiotherapy or IAPT for some low mood and support/coping strategies.
When booking your appointment, staff will remind you that if you develop any symptoms associated with COVID-19 prior to your face-to-face appointment, that you do not attend your appointment, but ring us to arrange a telephone appointment instead. We will monitor and review all these changes for safety and viability so that we can provide the best service we can within the current restrictions.
Thank you all for your support over the last year.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION - APRIL 2021
Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine & blood clotting – important information for patients
You will no doubt have seen the media coverage relating to the safety of the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine and the press conference held on 08/04/2021, from the European Medicines Agency (EMA), the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and the Joint Committee on Vaccinations and Immunisation (JCVI).
The overwhelming message is that Oxford AstraZeneca is an excellent vaccine and the benefits of having it outweigh the risks. No element of the vaccination programme has been halted, but new guidance has been issued which is summarised below.
Safety and efficacy have been assessed by several different sets of independent experts on both the regulatory and clinical sides, both here and across Europe. With a vaccination rollout of this scale, it is to be expected that there will be learning along the way. These rare and unusual events have been picked up early, analysed and acted on.
The recommendations in the new guidance are:
- Everyone who has had a first Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine should still have a second dose, irrespective of age, unless they have had a blood clot or have an existing risk of thrombosis
- People aged 30 and over, or those who have a health condition that puts them at higher risk of severe Covid-19 disease, should still be offered the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine.
- People aged 18-29 who do not have a health condition that puts them at higher risk of severe Covid-19 disease will be offered an alternative vaccine where available. (This has been recommended as a precaution as people under 30 are at less risk from Covid-19 and not because they are considered to be at greater risk of developing the rare blood clot.)
- People under 30 can still choose to have the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine if this will mean they can be protected more quickly and they have been made aware of the guidance.
